Reinforcing Steel (rebar) and
Reinforced concrete construction is
one of the most common and cost
effective methods of construction in
use today.
What is Rebar?
The first known use of reinforcing
steel date back to 1867 when a
Parisian gardener named Joseph
Monier who made cement pots and tubs
began using iron mesh to keep his
pots from cracking and breaking
apart. This seemed to work very well
and modern day reinforced concrete
began to emerge. The first
reinforced concrete structure ,the
Alvord Lake Bridge in San
Francisco's Golden Gate Park was
built by Ernst L Ransome in 1869
using steel rods and cable to
reinforce the concrete. This bridge
still stands today. The concept of
reinforced concrete is simple,
concrete is strong in compression
but weak in tension, steel is strong
in tension but weak in compression.
Together with proper engineering
they create a very strong structural
component with seemingly unlimited
uses in modern day construction.
